Mountaineering Museum
inaugurated
Appa Sherpa and Junko Tabei Wednesday jointly soft launched the
International Mountaineering Museum of the Nepal Mountaineering
Association (NMA) in the resort town of Pokhara Wednesday coinciding
with Everest Day marking the first conquest 49 years ago of the
world's tallest peak by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa,
organizers said. Appa Sherpa this spring climbed Everest for a record
12th ascent while Tabei was the first woman to climb the 8848 meters
high peak in 1975.
Tourism Minister Balbahadur K.C. announced a government reward of
Rs,500,000 for Appa's feat. The Museum, the biggest of its kind in the
world, will be completed in three phases at a cost of Rs.300 million.
"The inauguration is a big event. The Museum should help promote
tourism," Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said in a message.
